In the aftermath of the financial collapse of 2008 and the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in 2010, Iceland discovered an unexpected source of economic growth: tourism. In less than a decade, the island nation transformed from a Nordic secret to receiving seven times its population in annual visitors. ‘Iceland: The Cost of Tourism’ delves into the hidden implications of this tourism boom. This documentary provides an in-depth look at the challenges facing the tourism industry, as revealed by interviews with forest rangers, local residents displaced by holiday rentals and politicians caught between ecological concerns and economic interests.
